Friday, June 13 -- The New Languages Festival continues with two exceptional trios led by equally exceptional saxophonists: Jackson Moore and Tony Malaby. Opening for them is the composer, blogger Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, a big band that draws equally from Ellington and Phillip Glass, at The Living Theater, 21 Clinton St. below Houston. 8PM $10.
Saturday, June 14 -- Drummer Tom Rainey is know primarily as a kinetic sideman with the likes of Tony Malaby and Tim Berne, but he’ll be leading his own lithe trio of German saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and bassist Mark Helias tonight at Cornelia Street CafĂ©, 29 Cornelia Street. 9 & 10:30PM, $10.
Sunday, June 15 -- The big guns come out for the final night of the 2008 Vision Festival, starting with trumpeter Lewis Barnes’ Hampton Roads and continuing with bands led by Roy Nathanson, Abdoulaye Alhassane and a large ensemble led by William Parker at The Clemente Solo Velez Cultural Center, 107 Suffolk St. 7PM, $35.
Monday, June 16 -- British free-jazz saxophonist Paul Dunmall makes an appearance in NY with Tony Malaby, a saxophonist with an equally husky tone and penchant for unfettered melodicism, the dynamic bassist Mark Helias and drummer Kevin Norton at the Living Theater, 21 Clinton St. below Houston. $10PM, $10.
Tuesday, June 17 -- Few saxophonists play with the fluidity and conviction of Mark Turner and he’s found kindred spirits in bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard, members of his trio, Fly. The group will perform their unique brand of free-associative post-bop at The Jazz Gallery, 290 Hudson St. at 9 & 10:30PM, $15.
Wednesday, June 18 -- Tenor and soprano saxophonist Michael Blake has toured extensively and released two striking albums with his band Blake Tartare, but the group, Blake backed by a trio of young, Danish upstarts, has rarely performed in the city. Catch them tonight at the Jazz Standard 116 E. 27th St. between Park and Lexington, 7:30 & 9:30 PM, $20.
Thursday, June 19 -- Back-to-back sets of genre-defying music at The Stone tonight, at 8 a trio performance by drummer Gerald Cleaver, bassist William Parker and pianist Craig Taborn and at 10, Marty Ehrlich’s For Altos, featuring saxophonists, Michael Attias, Andy Laster and Ned Rothenberg.
